The Bayan Lepas Industrial Park here has become the first cybercity in the country to receive the ISO9001: 2000 certification. Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said that the certification was a performance delivery requirement under Multimedia Development Corp’s criteria once cybercity status was obtained.

He said the certification was more dynamic than the conventional ISO9001:2000 because it covered city-wide operations delivered by multiple parties, both public and private, to MSC-status companies located within the MSC Cybercity.

“Penang, in the last 35 years, has undergone three periods of growth.

“It is now entering the third phase, seeing a continuity and following the pattern of an information and communications technology age,'' he said at the award presentation to invest-in-Penang Bhd.

Dr Koh said Penang Cybercity would extend to Bertam in the second phase and Batu Kawan in the third.

“The strategic development and merging of three cybercities will undoubtedly enhance Penang as a thriving hub of knowledge, skilled manpower and technology intensive,” Dr Koh added.

InvestPenang chief executive officer Wan Zailena Noordin said a major achievement of Penang Cybercity was its ability to attract MSC-status companies to the state.

“As at Dec 31, 2005, Penang Cybercity had 73 MSC-status companies, surpassing the initial goal of 30 companies,'' she said. “Promoting Penang Cybercity and MSC is part of our overall promotion strategy for the state.''
